ByClaire&Friends Granny Christmas Tree

It's only 7 weeks to Christmas, and not so much time for preparations anymore haha! That is if you're like me, and you're too busy with other stuff, and then suddenly it's Christmas next week but you haven't even posted the Christmas cards yet...

So I thought, let's change that and start early this year.
The thing that has been on my to-do-list since last Christmas (yup!) is to translate the pattern for the Granny Christmas Tree which I designed for byClaire&Friends.
ByClaire Softmix and Sparkle are just perfect yarns for it, and you can buy it here if it is not available nearby you.

The design is in cooperation with byClaire and only intended for personal use, not commercially.
With that in mind I'll share the pattern in English here, please visit Claire's website for the free download of the original pattern in Dutch, the diagram and more photos.

What do you need?
- 1 ball of byClaire Softmix in the colour of your choice
(I made 3 already -Warning: addictive haha!-, I used 030 Grass Green, 008 Bright Pink and 031 Olive)*
- byClaire Softmix 040 Dark Brown for the tree trunk
- byClaire Sparkle 001 Snowflake
- crochet hook size 6
- scissors
- sharp needle with a big eye
* If you crochet tightly you can make a Christmas Tree with 1 ball of yarn. If you crochet more loosely, you could try crocheting with hook size 5 or 5,5 for example.

Project size: appr. 42 cm height x 35 cm width

Used abbreviations (U.S.):
slst = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
bl = back loops only

The Tree is crocheted top-down:
Ch 3 and form a ring with a slst.
1) Ch 2 (= first dc) and 2 dc in the ring (= 3).
2) Turn, ch 2 plus a dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 2 dc in the last stitch.

3) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 3 dc in the opening, ch 1, 2 dc in the last stitch.
4) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, 2x (ch 1, 3 dc in the opening), ch 1, 2 dc in the last stitch.
5) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, 3x (ch 1, 3 dc in the opening), ch 1, 2 dc in the last stitch.
6)Turn, slst in the first 2 stitches, slst in the opening, slst in the next 3 stitches, slst in the opening.

If the double crochet is made with the chain stitch (at the beginning of a row) I use 2 chains where you start with 2 double crochets, and 3 chains where you start with 3 double crochets. I tried several times and this looks more neat. Please check the diagram (free download at Claire's website) if you don't know what I mean.
So:
Ch 3, 2 dc in the same opening, ch 1, (2 dc, ch 3 and a slst) in the next opening.
Slst in the next 3 stitches, slst in the opening, slst in the next 2 stitches, fasten off.

7) Turn, attach in the first stitch (the second ch of the previous row),
ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 3 dc in the opening, ch 1, 2 dc in the last stitch.
8) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 2x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
9) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 3x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
10) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 4x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
11) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 5x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.

12) Turn, slst in the next 2 stitches, slst in the opening, slst in the next 3 stitches, slst in the opening,
ch 3, 2 dc in the same opening, ch 1, 2x (3 dc, ch 1),
(2 dc, ch 3, slst) in the next opening, slst in the next 3 stitches, slst in the opening, slst in the next 2 stitches, fasten off.

13) Turn, attach in the first stitch,
ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 3x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
14) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 4x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
15) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 5x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
16) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 6x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
17) Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 7x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.

18) Turn, slst in the next 2 stitches, slst in the opening, slst in the next 3 stitches, slst in the opening,
ch 3, 2 dc in the same opening, ch 1, 4x (3 dc, ch 1),
(2 dc, ch 3, slst) in the next opening, slst in the next 3 stitches, slst in the opening, slst in the next 2 stitches, fasten off.

19) Turn, attach in the first stitch,
ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 5x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 6x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 7x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 8x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 9x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch.
Turn, ch 2, dc in the first stitch, ch 1, 10x (3 dc, ch 1), 2 dc in the last stitch, fasten off.

The tree trunk:
Attach Dark Brown in the fifth opening.
Ch 7, turn, skip the first stitch and crochet (dc, hdc, 4 sc) in the base loops, 1 sc in the dc of the last row of the tree.

From now on you crochet in the back loops, so you get a nice ribbed effect: (sc in the next stitch of the tree, turn, 6 sc in the back loops,
turn -without a ch-, 6 sc in the back loops, sc in the next stitch of the tree).
Repeat (...) 2 more times.

Crochet another sc in the opening of the tree, (4 sc, hdc, dc) in the back loops, fasten off.

The snow:
This is crocheted with the same size hook, but with a double strand of Sparkle (this is also possible with only 1 ball of yarn).
Start at the highest 'branch', attach the yarn in the outer stitch and in every stitch (but skip the openings where you crocheted the 3 dc) you crochet (ch 2, sc) until you reach the outer stitch at the other side, fasten off.
-At the tree trunk you only crochet in the green part at the front to avoid the colour shining through.
- Tip: fold your work, this makes it easier to crochet along the edge.

Ch 20 to form a ring, so you can hang it on the wall with some washi tape, or on a window, or you could frame it.
Of course you can make the tree as big (or small) as you like, you simply multiply according to the pattern.
And I haven't tried it yet, but you could also make it with ByClaire Cotton for a smaller version or Chunky Cotton for an even bigger one! (Note to self: add to my to-do-list...)

I created this pattern with a lot of care. If you have any questions and/or remarks, please let me know at the comments, or on Instagram.
And of course I would love to see your Christmas Tree, so please use the hashtag #grannychristmastree or #grannykerstboom, or tag me.

Enjoy!
x Maartje

P.s. If you want to decorate your tree like I did: in my next blog I will share the pattern for the tiny baubles.

Crocheted Tartan Plant Pot Cover - Gehaakte Geruite Plantenpothoes

A couple of years ago I made this tutorial for byClaire & Friends.  It seemed the link didn't work anymore, and I wanted to translate it into English anyway, so here is the revised version. I hope you like it! If you would like the Dutch version, you can find it here: https://byclaire.eu/byclaire-friends-2 . This tutorial is for a pot with a diameter of 23 cm and hight 21 cm, but you can adjust it to a different size. If you want to make a swatch: crochet 1 square with 2 stripes on one side and at the top. Now you can measure how many you need for your pot, and maybe use a different size hook if you want smaller or bigger squares, or when you're using a different size yarn. For some more tips, please scroll down to the remarks underneath the pattern. What do you need: I used hook size 6 (and size 3 for hiding the ends), 2 balls of byClaire Softmix for the main colour, 1 ball of Softmix as the secondary colour and 1 ball of byClaire Sparkle. Used stitches: ch = chain slst =

Hoe mijn gehaakte deken 2 dekens werd... - How my crocheted blanket ended up as 2 blankets...

Such a great idea don't you think, a #netflixblanket (crocheting while netflixing, and when it's finished you can crawl under it while watching)!  Mindless crocheting, because it's only double crochets (U.S.), so no need to pay a lot of attention if you are a bit experienced. Af en toe even spelen... Some play time... It was so addictive that I didn't just crochet in front of the tv, but also in t

Noppensteek zonder doorschijn - Bobble Stitch with no visible contrasting colours

Hi everyone, I think I've got another nice tutorial for you. When you crochet the bobble stitch, normally you would take along the contrasting colour while crocheting. The way I do it is a bit more work, but the advantage is that you don't see any colours shining through on a light underground (like the picture below), but especially that you can make all dots in a different colour!  Dus hoe doe ik dat? Ik hecht de nieuwe kleur aan met minimaal 5 cm draadeind, haak de noppensteek (welke dan ook, met stokjes, dubbele stokjes etc., of wat ik voor mijn Polkadot
